KRAMPUS Gets Naughtier

Share

Ask the average genre fan what their favorite Christmas horror film is, and you'll probably hear "Black Christmas" as the answer more often than not. And for good reason: it's a scary, suspenseful film that helped kickstart the slasher sub-genre, but also contains a lot of humor that helps make it an all around easy choice to pull off the shelf every holiday.

DEADLY FRIEND's Source Novel Was A Basketball-Less Bummer

Share

While I obviously didn't know who he was at the time, the first Wes Craven movie I ever saw was DEADLY FRIEND, thanks to frequent cable showings when I was about seven years old. I'm not sure if anyone else did this, but I would frequently watch the end of movies on HBO or whatever; if it started at 3pm and I turned it on at around 4, it didn't matter to me that I had no context for anything I was seeing (sometimes I'd even RECORD the films like this, which is why I have seen the last 35 minutes of SPACEBALLS about 100x and the first hour maybe three times).

THE DEAD ZONE Was An Anomaly, But A Good One

Share

One of the many things I learned thanks to the two historian commentary tracks on Scream Factory's blu-ray of THE DEAD ZONE is that the 1979 novel was Stephen King's first one to hit the New York Times Bestseller list. Since the book followed the likes of THE SHINING and THE STAND, I was surprised and even kind of charmed to see that DEAD ZONE was the one to break that barrier for the author, as it is barely a horror story and - forty years and over fifty books later - remains one of his more atypical selections.

Tura Satana - Happy Birthday to the B-Movie Icon

Share

Despite it’s less than favorable reputation, the horror and exploitation genres have long since been an unexpected vehicle for female empowerment. Much of this can be credited to early female creators themselves, who saw the potential in counterculture. Women who found a voice and freedom in art that the general public would turn their noses up at. One of the earliest and most enduring icons of horror and exploitation cinema was burlesque star, Tura Satana who would have celebrated her 83rd birthday this month.

Thoughts On The Original (!) Version Of CURSED

Share

Among "can't miss" prospects, few in horror history ever seemed as promising as when it was announced that Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson would reteam for a werewolf film in the same vein as their original SCREAM, the trend-setting slasher that continues to draw audiences and inspire horror filmmakers today, 25 years later. Unfortunately, that resulting followup, aptly named CURSED, would be met with total indifference when it was released in February of 2005, grossing less than even the SCREAM wannabes that their previous success had inspired.

The Beach is Back - A Horror Film Playlist

Here we are, Summer 2021. Temperatures are on the rise and the world is slowly shifting back to some semblance of normalcy. Bikinis are being dusted off and blow-up beer pong tables are coming out of hibernation. School’s out and the Fourth of July is just around the corner. It’s officially Beach Party Season. Luckily, with every beloved and pleasant societal convention, there is a slew of horror films on deck to crash the party.

PARASITE EVE Needs An Advent Children Of Its Own

Share

To a newcomer, the Final Fantasy series may seem impenetrable at this stage, as the most recent entry was the 15th in the mainline series and a 16th is on the way. But those in the know can quickly wave away any fears of it being "too late" to jump on board, as the games share no real connective tissue of note. Each game tells a new story with new characters, with only a handful of creature types (Cactaurs and Chocobos are the series' mainstays) and the general tone of their narratives being the only thing that ties all the games together.

The Real World Needs JACK SLATER

Share

According to the press release that accompanied my copy of Last Action Hero on 4K UHD, Sony ran a poll to see what film from their library people most wanted to see in the new format, and this film was the winner. That’s pretty impressive for a film that was notoriously one of the biggest flops of the decade (suck it, Hudson Hawk!*). After Terminator 2 became the biggest film of 1991, Arnold Schwarzenegger was on top of the (box office) world, and chose this as his next project.

SOUTHLAND TALES Makes A Lot More Sense, Now

Like most people who have seen it, I didn’t know what to make of Southland Tales the first time I watched it, which was on home video as I wasn’t quick enough to be part of its very limited theatrical release in the fall of 2007. There were certainly parts of it I really enjoyed (Dwayne “no longer The Rock” Johnson’s performance chief among them) but there was just SO MUCH going on at all times I just couldn’t connect to it. It was like getting every reveal from the entire run of Lost condensed into 140 minutes.

Over the past decade, there has been a welcome shift in the use of CGI when it comes to low budget/independent genre films. As these tools got cheaper and easier to use, there was an unfortunate period where digital beasties were cropping up in productions that didn’t exactly have the resources to let them compete with the likes of ILM, but I’m happy to see that those sorry examples are becoming rarer.

A Tribute to Christopher Plummer

Share

Ever since Ridley Scott made the unprecedented decision to replace Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer in All The Money in the World (just three weeks before the film premiered!), there have been countless jokes about the latter filling in for whatever performer was being unceremoniously removed from this or that film. Like most things, Twitter ran it into the ground, but it was still amusing in small doses; in fact it was only a week or so ago that someone joked he could replace Marilyn Manson on an episode of Creepshow.

Come On Ride The TERROR TRAIN

Share

Jamie Lee Curtis made three slasher films immediately after HALLOWEEN'S success in 1978 and 1979. The first was PROM NIGHT, a very dated and poorly paced movie that has more ironic fans (thanks, disco dancing Leslie Nielsen!) than legitimate ones. The most famous is probably 1981's HALLOWEEN II, which picked up directly after the events of the first film, which meant she spent most of the movie in a hospital bed. And then in the middle is TERROR TRAIN, probably the least seen of the trio but also - in my opinion - the best of them as well.

Revisiting The RESIDENT EVIL Franchise

Share

No one expects much out of a movie based on a video game, and even fewer would expect any such film to become a major franchise with almost as many entries as the game series that inspired it. But the Resident Evil films did just that; Paul WS Anderson and Milla Jovovich joined forces six times from 2002 to 2017, presenting an ever-escalating story about Alice (Jovovich) and her endless battles with zombies and other monsters that were spawned by the evil Umbrella corporation.

The Horror of the Amityville Series

Four Terrifying Short Films to Pair with Horror Favorites

Share

Do you like Pixar? You’re a human with feelings, so I assume you do. Although, if you’re reading the blog of a page called Screamfest, it’s possible it is not your cup of tea. Regardless of your opinion on animated fish, their tradition of playing a short film before their main features has proven to be a tradition enjoyed by many a generation. On a more historical note, it was not uncommon for short films to screen before feature films quite a bit in theaters and drive-ins, as far back as the 1950’s.

Kicking Off 2018 with Mom & Dad

If 2017 has taught us anything; it is that horror films could finally be on track to becoming more universally respected. Those of us who have been fans of the genre for years have always been well aware of its artistic and social significance. However, with not one but two genre films receiving Oscar nods for Best Picture this year, the Horror genre finally seems to be getting some of the high-brow acknowledgement that it has long since deserved. But with 2017 being as strong as it was, it may prove to be a tough act to follow.

Five Films to Get You Ready for Leatherface

In combination with the recent Screamfest announcement that we would be hosting the North American premiere of the much-anticipated Leatherface, and the recent and devastating loss of the great Tobe Hooper, this is the perfect time to honor the franchise that stemmed from his original masterpiece, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The TCM franchise has grown to be about as diverse as Hooper’s own career. It has explored everything from prequels to sequels to remakes. RIP George Romero: A Look Back at Martin

Share

This past Sunday, we experienced yet another crippling tragedy in the horror community. The death of George A Romero is the kind of loss that feels deeply personal. He has inspired filmmakers and fans alike and for many (if not most) his films were what first kindled our love for film and the genre. I’ve already seen an influx of articles and screenings paying tribute to this incredible filmmaker, and uncle we wished we had. When I was eleven years old, I took an interest in horror films.

James Whale: Defender of Monsters

In the history of cinema, there are very few icons that rival Frankenstein’s monster and his bride. They are instantly and internationally identifiable. From a civilian standpoint, they are universal symbols of horror films and Halloween (no pun intended). However, for those who take a more all-year-round approach to the spooky and weird, they are nothing short of idols. They are the freak flags we fly to celebrate the films that started it all. The films that continue to strike a cord with people today. Despite being released nearly 90 years ago.

Top Four Shoestring Budget Horror Films

Making a film can be a daunting venture for most people. There will always be a reason (or many) to not do it. It is nearly impossible to attend a filmmaker Q&A without someone in the audience asking what their advice would be to prospective filmmakers and across the board the answer is almost always the same: just do it. Scrounge up some cash, call in a lifetime’s worth of favors and just make your damn movie. We live in a time of overwhelming accessibility. High quality technology is readily available to just about anyone, yet it can still be a terrifying gamble.

Top Five Christian Theology Horror Films of the 90’s

Share

The 1990’s are often thought of as having relatively little to contribute in the way of quality genre films. While I can see the truth in this, I think there were some very special and unique films to emerge from the decade, especially within the confines of the unique subgenres that emerged. These were the days of Erotic Thrillers and Teen Dark Comedies, of Hacker Thrillers and Meta Slasher films. One of my favorite subgenres to have emerged in the prime days of Gen X, was their twist on Christian Theology Horror.

The Real Unsolved Murders of Lake Bodom

Share

During Screamfest 2016, a young actress by the name of Mimosa Willamo won our award for Best Actress for her performance in the Finnish film Lake Bodom, or simply Bodom, the third feature for talented director Taneli Mustonen. After seeing so many films in such short succession, it is sometimes difficult for a film to stand out, Lake Bodom however, firmly rooted itself in my psyche. Part of that, was the enigmatic mystery that inspired the film. Much like most horror fans, I am not as easily impressed by the “based on a true story” gimmick as I once was.

Top Five Gateway Horror Films

For almost any kid subjected to the public school system in the United States, you are probably familiar with the D.A.R.E program. For those unfamiliar, it is a program to educate young children on the dangers of doing drugs. Until very recently, marijuana was considered a “gateway drug”, relatively harmless if used on it’s own, but could pique an interest in harder stuff. Now, what if the same idea were to be applied to the horror genre?

The Return of the Creature Feature

With the breakout success of Stranger Things and the plethora of 1980’s inspired genre fare popping up recently, it seems as though we have been indulging in a certain level of what I like to call "nostalgia porn". These 80’s throwbacks have saturated the genre over the past several years and don’t seem to be stopping any time soon. But what is it about this era of horror that we all find so appealing, even to those of us that were not even alive yet? Horror films in the 80’s benefitted from a very special window of freedom.

The Grand Guignol: Theatre of Horror

Share

Long before the days of film festivals and conventions, even before the days of celluloid, the primary medium of entertainment was theater. Now I’m not talking about the high class productions found in London’s West End or the black tie affair of the opera; I’m talking about something much more objectionable. If you had visited Paris at the tail end of the 19th century, deep in it’s notorious Monmarte district, and you had walked along it’s cobblestone streets, past it’s illicit sex trade operations, you would have come upon an old gothic looking chapel.

The Power of Sound in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The first time I ever heard about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, my mother was talking about how it was the most brutal, gory movie she had ever seen. By the time I got around to actually seeing the film, it was much to my surprise, although brutal as it was, it had little to no blood. Even the majority of the violence is implied. So what was it that had my Mom so convinced that she had seen a bloodbath? The biggest contributing factor was the power of sound design. As a horror fan, I have come to appreciate the importance and potential of sound design in a very unique way.

Often considered to be the master of “body horror”, David Cronenberg has spent the last four decades constructing a signature style that is often copied but rarely matched. Exploration seems to be the goal of his films.

Five Horror Films set in Movie Theaters Part 1

As the largest and longest running horror film festival in the United States, we here at Screamfest are no strangers to the power of the theater going experience. Most of us cinegeeks recall some of our best memories as those spent in the darkness of movie theaters. Watching films at home, although convenient, does not quite compare to the energy of a crowd, especially in regards to genre films.

Jackie Kong: The Queen of Camp

Seeing as how we are counting down the last few days of February, I’m going to take this opportunity to celebrate one more woman who has recently popped back into the zeitgeist, cult film extraordinaire, Jackie Kong. At this point the difficulties women face in Hollywood have been more than expressed, but as an Asian American woman making sleazy horror comedies in the 1980’s, writer/director Jackie Kong sure as hell had her work cut out for her. Despite her relatively few directorial ventures, she quickly established a signature style all of her own.
